PAGASA Super Typhoon Ruby (Hagupit) Weather Update: Public Storm Signals Released


The Samar provinces are still in the direct path of the Typhoon Ruby, with an international codenamed Hagupit, has has maintained its strength overnight Saturday, December 6th.

The Typhoon Ruby, which is currently located 240 KM east northeast of Borongan, Eastern Samar as of 4 A.M. of Saturday. Typhoon Hagupit currently possessed a maximum sustained winds of 195 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 230kph, state weather bureau Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Service Administration (PAGASA) said. Moreover, the typhoon is also estimated to release heavy to intense rainfall within its 600-kilometer diameter, the PAGASA added.

Still, the Typhoon Ruby is currently classified as a super typhoon by the U.S. Navy Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC). That said, the three major provinces of Samar – Eastern Samar, Northern Samar and Samar – are under public storm warning signal number 3, where the sustained winds between 100 to 185 kph are expected within 18 hours.

PAGASA is expecting Typhoon Hagupit to lanfall on Sunday morning, December 7th, over the Eastern Samar – Northern Samar area and it will be associated with strong winds, storm surge (up to 4.5 meters) and heavy-intense rainfall. The state weather agency added that Typhoon Ruby and the Northeast Monsoon will bring rough to very rough sea conditions over the seaboards of Northern Luzon, eastern seaboard of Central and Southern Luzon, seaboards of Visayas and over northern and eastern seaboards of Mindanao. Fisherfolks and those using small seacraft are advised not to venture out over the said seaboards.

PAGASA forecasts the powerful storm to cross Samar or 110 km of Southeast of Catarman, then over Masbate, and Romblon, as well as the northern part of Mindoro island. On Monday morning the storm is forecasts to be in 30 km East of Romblon, Romblon or in the vicinity of Sibuyan Island, and on Tuesday morning: 150 km West of Calapan City. Typhoon Ruby is expected exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on Wednesday evening, December 10th.
